I Heart Faces - Week 38 - Blue (& Sneak Peek)

It's blue week at I heart faces, and lucky me! My 1st ever maternity shoot was yesterday, and the mom-to-be wore a blue shirt (fitting since she's having a boy!).

There are so many entries at I Heart Faces this week! Which is really awesome, although I'll admit that I feel a little bit bad for the judge...lots of pictures to look at! :)

You know you want to check out I Heart Faces..and especially this week. :) I'll be posting more of the maternity pictures sooooon-ish. Check back!

Update I forgot to submit this to I Heart Faces :(. I totally spaced it, and it's too late now. It's not a big deal because there were over 500 entrants, but I just totally forgot! I guess it's just a sneak peek for the Peterson's :)

Family Photos - What to Wear

I've been asked by a few people about what they should wear for their family photos. It's ultimately up to you of course, but I can definitely understand the dilemma of having to decide. You want to look good without clashing, and you want fuuun pictures. So, I've been doing some research and finding tips from "experts". This is my favorite resource so far:

I really like this website: http://womensfashion.suite101.com/article.cfm/color_coordinating_clothes. It gives you a list of "main" colors, and then good colors to go along with that. So, if you know you want to wear your favorite dark brown shirt, you can look at the list of colors that coordinate well with that color. In the case of dark brown it suggests lemon yellow, baby blue, mint green, baby purple, or lime green. Don't feel like your restricted to these colors either, but it's a good start if you're feeling lost in color decisions.

They also talk about color combination's to avoid:

"It’s best to avoid holiday colors such as red and green, orange and black, pink and red, along with red and yellow, which bring to mind the hamburger chain with golden arches. Steer away from wearing the same color on top and bottom unless it’s black. For instance, a red shirt with red pants can look tasteless and tacky."

For family photos, I like to see people wearing things they're comfortable wearing, and that you would see them wear out and about. Make sure you like it and have fun with it. Don't stress about it! And don't feel like you need to follow the exact guidelines of the "experts". I like bright colors and fun things. If you're really struggling with ideas, look at other family photos that you like, and pull ideas from there. And always always be comfortable and have fun!

I'll end on a photo of a nicely color coordinated family :)

I Heart Faces - Week 29 - Completely Candid

I think this is my favorite photo of all time. I love love love the expression on Sarah's face. I was actually in this wedding, so I wasn't the photographer. But, Brandon had the camera handy, so I snapped a few pictures.

I Heart Faces is a really great source for inspiration and assistance for all photographers! Check it out!

In other news, this blog will be moving soon! (I know...again...for all that followed me formerly). But, I promise this move is permanent as I purchased a domain name and am in the process of finishing up my official photography website! I'm pretty darn excited. In the mean time, check out the I Heart Faces blog. It's really the bomb!

Red Ribbon

This photo is a little bit old (Taken on April 1st of this year), but I thought I would add it. I was looking at some photos that I've taken recently and realized how much I've grown creatively in the past 9 months. This photo really marks the start of my mastering photo editing and really studying photography and graphic design. I graduated with my B.S. in Computer Graphics last December and took some time off between then and when I started my M.S. It was really during that time that I really started "learning to be creative". And, it's been awesome ever since! I'm so excited for my upcoming Family & Wedding photography shoots. Thank you so so much for letting me take your pictures! :)

P.S. I'm REALLY excited for the I Heart Faces photo competition next week. You've already seen the photo, but I think it'll be a perfect fit. Check out their Friday blogs. Since I'm in school, I haven't been participating in the Fix-It-Friday competitions, but it's really good photo editing inspiration.

Once upon a time...

Once upon a time I took this photo in mid May:

I follow the photography blog of Bobbi + Mike. I think they are amaaaazing! I love their photos. Anyway, I was looking at their blog and saw a photo that taken in an oh so familiar place:

For the first time in my life, I really felt creative! :)

Brian & Sarah - Wedding

This is my reward for finishing my homework early...I got to edit the pictures from my brother's wedding...So, here goes (you can click on them to see them bigger):

I put this up yesterday, but it had to go in the mix. This is Brian before the ceremony. I had the idea of taking his picture fishing, since that's what he does and what he's always done.

Ring Exchange

Cue little flower girl!

Cowgirl Boots

Me & Tanner (he's a fun kid!)

My favorite!! :)

Second favorite:

Brandon and Tanner (Ring Bear/Cousin) playing around

First Dance

Mother/Son Dance

These are by brothers friends from elementary school. They've kept in touch through the years. They both paid to dance with him during the dollar dance.

Mom, Sarah, and Me (the "Batta" girls..even though my name isn't Batta anymore):

I Heart Faces - Week 36 - Contemplative

I know it's been a few weeks since I participated in the I Heart Faces competition, but in my defense, I started grad school and have been consumed in readings and projects.

This week's challenge was contemplative. I think it can be truly challenging to capture a contemplative facial expression, but this photo just says it all for me. This is my brother on his wedding day. He is a country boy through and through, and I had the idea of taking his picture with his favorite past time...fishing. So Brian! He pretty much came out of the womb fishing! It's safe to say that he and I are about as different as night and day, but we get along really well.

I was in the wedding, so I wasn't their photographer. I'm really anxious to see her pictures though. I was taking mental notes the whole time, so that I can improve my own wedding photography. I'll have more pictures from the day up soon!!

Food Props

After having soooo much fun taking this photo:

(I love Ben's face! haha)

It got me thinking about food props for kids. It's a good way to end a photo session because it makes them happy, and it makes for some really stinkin fun pictures. So, here's my brainstorming so far:

Lollipops (as seen above)
Ice Cream Cones
Cotton Candy
Watermelon (for a healthier, but not so messy treat)
Caramel Apple (with or without nuts) (probably too messy)
Bananas (They're colorful. And healthy! And not so messy.)
Colorful Bottled Soda (like Jones Soda's random flavors)

Some may be a bit too messy for certain age groups, but I think it's a descent start to get me thinking. I think I might go visit a couple candy shops for some more ideas. I really like coloful fun photos!

Photo Cards

I've been trying to work on ideas for photo cards. I think my goal is to have a few by Christmas for Christmas card time, but we'll see. This isn't quite the look I'm going for for Christmas Cards, but it's fun. I'll be trying again this weekend :)

The Maas Family has been working on some of their own beautiful designs with their photographs too! What I've done is pretty darn simple, but it's a start to get me thinking.

Mission Headboard

Awhile ago, I found a tutorial for a headboard. I actually followed-ish the tutorial and made a headboard for our bed! Enjoy the photos.

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do with the canvases on the shelf above our bed. I painted them to match the colors in our comforter, but I want to add some sort of pattern or something to them. I just can't make up my mind, so until then, they're blank. I think I might try to add the flower that's in the headboard pattern...Still not totally set on it though.

Jeff, Ann, Ehre, & Ben

Say hello to the Maas Family! This was probably the best times I've had on a photo shoot. Kids are so fun! I'm learning quickly that you have to be speedy to take pictures of kids. They like to run and play...and not pose so much. It's a long one! So here goes:

After they sat still for the ones in the blog post from yesterday, they ran toward me:

My view:

B's view:

We really like this photo. It looks like she's standing there waiting for the train! It's just simple and cute.

Favorite!

We finished the day with some lolly pops from McCords (I think I spelled that right.)

I love how you can see the sugar smudges on her nose and lips! haha
